According to a Reuters survey, nearly all of the 107 economists predict that the Federal Reserve will implement a 25 basis point key interest rate cut on September 17, and most experts expect further interest rate cuts in the first quarter of next year. The market has fully digested the expectation of a rate cut in September, and is currently expected to have three interest rate cuts this year, compared with only two expected a few weeks ago.
Among the 107 economists surveyed, 64 (60%) are expected to have a cumulative interest rate cut by 50 basis points by the end of 2025. 37% of experts predict a 75 basis points decline this year, a sharp increase from the 22% proportion in August. 26 economists say that inflation is more likely to surge in the next year or that inflation and unemployment will coexist with rapid rise in the unemployment rate. The median survey shows that the Fed will cut interest rates by another 75 basis points next year, reducing the federal funds rate to 3.00%-3.25%.
