Self-defense defendants stop Trump's conspiracy from becoming a focus in high-stakes trial

Ryan Routh is charged with attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump in September 2024, and the federal trial in the case began on Monday. Ruth defended himself and pleaded not guilty to federal charges including attempted assassination of presidential candidates and breach of gun laws. Prosecutors accused him of plotting down Trump's plane for weeks and obtaining an SKS rifle with the help of two pleaded accomplices. The trial will continue on Tuesday, when additional juror screening will be conducted.
