According to BlockBeats, on September 11, the SSV team released a detailed post-event analysis of two recent fines and confiscation incidents. The monitoring system marked a fines and confiscation incident for the first time at 11:51 UTC time on Wednesday. About 90 minutes later, the second larger-scale confiscation incident affected 39 validators. The investigation shows that both incidents are caused by external factors of the SSV protocol and are clearly related to verifier key management. Among the two incidents, the larger ones were related to long-term equity pledge service provider Ankr, who admitted that due to the wrong operation and maintenance configuration, the verifier key was simultaneously active in two different infrastructures, resulting in the confiscation. The company immediately shut down the affected operators and worked with SSV Labs to confirm the root cause. The smaller incident involved validators who had previously migrated from hosting provider Allnodes, and is still under investigation, but investigators suspect that the auxiliary validator setup also played a role. SSV Labs CEO Alon Muroch said the validator confiscation incident did not undermine the SSV protocol and that no action was required for operators or stakeholders. Looking at the logs of the two events, no indications were found that there was a double signature or failure on the SSV side.
